- Great taste
- Limited Flavor Options (only basics)
- Somewhat expensive (as much as $16.70 per lb)
I’ve always been a fan of products by Optimum Nutrition. Virtually every product and supplement they make is extremely high quality and you usually can’t go wrong trying their stuff. PRO Complex is part of Optimum Nutrition’s “PRO Series” product line and is no exception to excellence, as you’ll read in this Optimum Nutrition PRO Complex review.
I normally use Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% Whey for my post-workout protein needs, but I decided to try PRO Complex to change things up. Well, I finished the entire 3.35 LB tub in less than two months and just placed another order.
Written right on the tub:
Muscles are made bigger and stronger with hard training, adequate rest and amino acids from protein. To help meet the recovery needs of elite athletes and goal-driven weight lifters, we developed this stack of superior quality proteins with naturally occurring and added BCAAs and L-Glutamine. One look at the Facts Panel will tell you PRO Complex has a lot to offer, and you’ll be amazed at how effortlessly the powder mixes up into a great tasting shake.
While this contains some wording geared toward marketing the product, I found it to be pretty spot on, especially the parts about the quality protein blend and the easy mixing.
For those who don’t already know, many people supplement with whey protein before and/or after a workout because whey proteins are quickly absorbed into the body and used to fuel and rebuild muscles through protein synthesis.
The nutrition facts on the tub speak for themselves:
PRO Complex includes two types of whey protein: Isolate and Hydrolyzed proteins. According to Wikipedia, whey protein isolates contain a “higher percentage of pure protein and can be pure enough to be virtually lactose free, carbohydrate free, fat free, and cholesterol free,” while protein hydrolysate consumption “allows amino acids to be absorbed by the body more rapidly… thus maximizing nutrient delivery to muscle tissues.”
Okay, so we know the science behind PRO Complex is solid. What about other important factors, such as taste?
Usually I’m hesitant to try chocolate flavored supplements because I’ve found that many of them have had almost a chalky taste, but like I said in the “Cons” column, PRO Complex doesn’t have many flavor options (only basic flavors like “vanilla” and “strawberry”).
But I tried the “rich milk chocolate” flavor and it is hands-down the most delicious protein powder drink mix I’ve ever had. That’s not an exaggeration. It tastes great. I was so happy (I’ve had my share of bad tasting proteins — and after getting a tub you’re stuck with it for a while). This protein powder also mixes extremely well. I pour it right in a glass of water and it mixes easily and the taste is fantastic. You could also try mixing it with milk for more protein and a thicker protein shake.
Bottom line, if you’re looking for a solid whey protein drink mix that mixes well and tastes great and is made by a very reputable company, 100% backed by nutrition science, then Optimum Nutrition PRO Complex is for you.
